PhilHealth Launches ₱1,000 Dental Care Package to Promote Oral Health Across the Philippines

The Philippines is known for its vibrant culture and the friendly smiles of its people. However, many Filipinos face a significant challenge in oral health, with preventable dental issues affecting their overall well-being and productivity.

According to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) 2022 Philippine Country Oral Health Profile, nearly 30% of Filipino children aged 5 and older suffer from dental decay, which can lead to chronic pain and hinder their academic performance.

In adults, 7.5% have experienced complete tooth loss, negatively impacting their self-esteem and job prospects. Oral diseases also come with a heavy economic burden, resulting in an annual loss of approximately PHP 47.984 billion (about USD 825 million) due to lost productivity, medical expenses, and preventable treatments.

In response to this growing issue, the Philippine government, through the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth), has launched a new initiative aimed at improving the nation’s dental health. The new PhilHealth Dental Care Package is designed to make preventive dental services accessible and affordable for all Filipinos, moving the focus away from expensive restorative treatments.

Dr. Bernadette C. Lico, Vice President of PhilHealth Regional Office NCR and Rizal, introduced the new package during the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas forum. She explained that PhilHealth members will be entitled to a ₱1,000 annual benefit for preventive dental care. This funding allows beneficiaries to access essential procedures that can help prevent major dental issues.

The dental package covers two annual visits, with a four-month gap between appointments. The first visit, priced at ₱300, includes a comprehensive dental exam, professional cleaning, and fluoride varnish application. The second visit, also costing ₱300, provides follow-up care. The remaining ₱400 can be used for additional treatments such as dental sealants or emergency extractions.

This initiative by PhilHealth aims to promote better oral health across the country, helping reduce the long-term impacts of untreated dental problems and ensuring that more Filipinos have access to necessary dental care.
