Seniors in Algoma aged 65 and older can now access free routine dental care under the Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program (OSDCP).
A provincial initiative launched in 2019, the Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program (OSDCP) provides free dental services to low-income seniors. The program aims to improve oral health and overall well-being for seniors without insurance.
Algoma Public Health (APH) announced that seniors in the region can now receive free routine dental care, including check-ups, cleanings, dentures, and necessary procedures. APH noted that only 30% of seniors in Algoma currently have dental insurance, leaving many without essential dental care.
According to APH, the OSDCP is available to seniors 65 years and older who meet specific income requirements. Seniors with an annual income of less than $25,000 for individuals, or $41,500 for couples, may qualify for the program.
Additionally, applicants must not have access to dental coverage through private insurance or government programs such as the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP).
“The lack of access to dental care can severely impact a senior’s health and quality of life,” said APH. “Poor oral health makes it difficult to eat, speak, and maintain good overall health.”
The Ministry of Health estimates that approximately 3,792 seniors in Algoma may be eligible for the program.
Appointments are available at Algoma Public Health’s Sault Ste. Marie office, as well as other locations in the Algoma district.
Nicole Lindahl, Manager of the Oral Health Program at APH, emphasized the program’s significance: “Providing free dental care for low-income seniors helps alleviate concerns for both seniors and their families about not being able to access essential services.”
As Algoma’s senior population grows rapidly, programs like the OSDCP are crucial in reducing health disparities and enhancing quality of life, APH concluded.
