New Dental Office Proposed for Elm Street Building in New Canaan

by Audrey

The owners of a commercial building at 208 Elm St. in New Canaan are seeking permission from the Planning & Zoning Commission to repurpose part of the space into a dental office. The building, formerly a Bankwell branch, has struggled to attract tenants as a bank, according to the owners, New Canaan Lumber Co.

The proposal involves adding 575 square feet on the lower level, creating a 2,207-square-foot space for dental or medical use. The lower level previously housed bank offices, a safe, and safety deposit boxes. The property includes 28 parking spaces in the adjacent lumberyard lot. Plans submitted show four patient rooms within the proposed dental office.

According to the application letter, the addition would eliminate two parking spaces but add one disabled parking space.

New Canaan Zoning Regulations permit “General and Medical Offices” smaller than 10,000 square feet in the Business A zone with site plan approval.

Another former bank building nearby, previously a TD Bank at Grove and Elm Streets, is slated to become a pet store with grooming services.
