Dental School’s Sonríe Clinic Brings Smiles to Eastern NC’s Hispanic Community

Language barriers often make it difficult to connect, but a smile transcends all languages.

On February 15, students, faculty, staff, and volunteers from East Carolina University’s School of Dental Medicine gathered at Ross Hall to provide dental care to 47 individuals from eastern North Carolina’s Hispanic community. This marked the fifth annual Sonríe Clinic, the largest event since its inception in 2021.

The clinic, named after the Spanish word for “smile,” was initially organized by the school’s Hispanic Student Dental Association (HSDA) to assist migrant farmworkers and the broader Hispanic population. It was sponsored by the North Carolina Dental Society Foundation. More than 75 volunteers participated in the event, helping to serve a record number of patients.

“It’s an honor to care for this community,” said Krystal Jaimes, a third-year dental student. “This was my first opportunity to provide direct care. In the past, I volunteered as an assistant and interpreter, so transitioning to performing treatments has been incredibly special.”

Jaimes, who also serves as the volunteer coordinator for HSDA, worked closely with the Association of Mexicans in North Carolina (AMEXCAN) to connect with patients and promote the clinic. She ensured that patients received assistance with registration, form filling, and addressing any concerns.

Annette Echevarria, a third-year dental student and president of HSDA, highlighted the significance of this year’s event. “It shows there is a real need in this area,” she said. “It also sets the stage for future efforts to serve this community.”
