KARACHI: The Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Baqai Dental College, part of Baqai Medical University (BMU), recently launched its first workshop focused on pediatric dentistry. Titled “A New Era in Pulp Therapy: Empowering Primary Molar Treatment with Kiddo Rotary File,” the event aimed to showcase new advancements in pediatric dental care for final-year BDS students and dental house officers.

The workshop opened with a speech from BDC Vice Dean Dr. Shakila Nazir, who welcomed the participants. Dr. Saleha Shah, Assistant Professor and Head of Pediatric Dentistry, followed with a lecture discussing pulp pathology in primary molars.

Dr. Danish Shahnawaz, also an Assistant Professor and Consultant in Restorative Dentistry and Endodontics, presented a comprehensive lecture on modern pulp therapy techniques, highlighting the latest advancements in treating primary molars.

A special session on gingivitis and hypersensitivity was led by Mr. Fahim Bhatti from Haleon GSK, the workshop’s sponsor.

The event’s highlight was a hands-on demonstration by Dr. Shahnawaz, covering procedures such as indirect and direct pulp capping, pulpotomy, and pulpectomy in primary molars.

Participants had the opportunity to observe a live video demonstration of a pulpectomy procedure that utilized the innovative Kiddo Rotary File System. This practical session aimed to provide attendees with a thorough understanding of modern treatment approaches and techniques.

The workshop’s goal was to deepen participants’ knowledge of pulpal pathology and equip them with essential skills for both vital and non-vital pulp therapy. Attendees received hands-on experience with Kiddo Rotary Files, enhancing their confidence in performing complex dental procedures.

Following the practical sessions, a shield distribution ceremony took place, featuring speeches from the chief guest, BDC Dean Prof. Dr. Asaad Javaid, and Principal Prof. Dr. Muhammad Farhan Khan.

The event was sponsored by Haleon GSK, which provided an informative lecture along with a kiosk for Bone Mineral Density checks and Plaque Index evaluations. Participants also received souvenir bags and lunch during the workshop.

Additionally, the Department of Pediatric Dentistry distributed booklets containing guidelines on pulp therapy from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and UK National Clinical Guidelines.

Faculty members from various departments including Pediatric Dentistry, Operative Dentistry, and Endodontics facilitated the hands-on session. Support for the event came from BMU’s auxiliary and housekeeping staff as well as the Department of Communication for marketing efforts and the Department of Medical Education for online registration and Continuing Dental Education (CDE) accreditation certificates.

The Department of Administration played a crucial role in ensuring smooth logistical arrangements that contributed to the overall success of the workshop.

The Department of Pediatric Dentistry expressed gratitude to BMU, Baqai Dental College, and all stakeholders for their contributions. This workshop underscores Baqai Dental College’s commitment to fostering innovation and advancing pediatric dental care practices.
