Dental Group Launches Free Oral Health Initiative for Public

The Hong Kong Dental Association (HKDA) has launched a major public health campaign to boost dental care awareness among Hong Kong residents. Starting May 24, the six-day “Oral Health Week” will offer free oral examinations and consultations to all holders of Hong Kong identity cards. This initiative responds to worrying data showing that fewer than 60 percent of adults and only one-third of elderly citizens undergo regular dental check-ups.

The campaign highlights growing medical evidence linking poor oral hygiene to serious health problems, including possible connections between gum disease and cognitive decline. During Oral Health Week, participating dental clinics across the city will provide free basic screenings, personalized oral health advice, and X-ray services when clinically necessary.

In addition, the HKDA has introduced a bonus scheme for seniors aged 65 and above. Those who spend at least HK$1,000 of their existing healthcare vouchers on dental treatments between May 1 and October 31 will receive an extra HK$500 in dental vouchers. Century Tsang Hin-kei, Vice President of HKDA, said the scheme aims to encourage preventive care, aligning with the government’s Primary Healthcare Blueprint.

The association also reported strong engagement in its youth programs. Over 200 dentists have joined the “Primary Dental Co-care Pilot Scheme for Adolescents,” which offers comprehensive dental coverage for students across Hong Kong. HKDA officials are ready to expand the program if demand grows.

This campaign and related initiatives reflect a broader effort to promote regular dental check-ups and preventive care, which experts say are more effective and cost-efficient than treating dental diseases after they develop. The HKDA encourages residents to take advantage of these free services to improve their oral health and overall well-being.
