LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KATV) — The Arkansas Mission of Mercy is set to host its annual free dental clinic at the Conway Expo Center this weekend. The event aims to provide essential dental care to individuals and families who do not have insurance.
Dr. Mark Murphy, the volunteer director of the event, shared that Arkansas has one of the lowest dentist-to-population ratios in the country. He said, “We’re always striving to make progress, but when you look at the number of dentists compared to the population, we’re probably one of the lowest states.”
The clinic, organized by the Arkansas State Dental Association, has been a crucial community event since its inception in 2007. Although it was temporarily paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the clinic is back and running strong. Dr. Murphy explained, “This is a two-day event that has been held annually, with the exception of COVID. We took a break in 2021 and 2022, but we’ve been back for a few years now and it’s been successful.”
The free clinic offers various dental services, including cleanings, fillings, and extractions, without any financial barriers.
“There are no financial requirements. We don’t ask any questions related to finances,” Dr. Murphy clarified.
However, there is a brief health screening before treatment begins. Patients will have their vital signs checked, and their blood and glucose levels tested, but no questions about their financial situation will be asked.
With the support of over 900 volunteers, including more than 100 dentists, the clinic is a significant community-driven effort. Dr. Murphy noted the dedication of the volunteers, stating, “We have a large team of dental professionals who work tirelessly to make this event successful.”
The clinic is open to anyone who passes the health screening, and those interested are encouraged to arrive early. Dr. Murphy recommended arriving before 5 a.m. on either of the two days to ensure being seen. “If you’re in line between 4 and 5 a.m., we’re committed to getting you in,” he said.
While the free dental care is a valuable resource, attendees should prepare for some waiting. “Be ready to wait a little bit,” Dr. Murphy advised. “But if you’re in line, we’ll make sure you get the help you need.”
The Arkansas Mission of Mercy continues to serve as a vital community resource, providing free dental care to those in need and helping to address the state’s dental care shortages.
