Gulf Coast State College Offers Free Dental Care for Kids at Annual ‘Kidz Klinic’ Event

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Gulf Coast State College is promoting healthy dental habits among children through its annual Kids Klinic, which emphasizes the importance of oral hygiene from a young age.

This week-long clinic is fully booked with 80 appointments and provides dental hygiene students with hands-on experience in treating young patients. Miranda Stewart, the Dental Hygiene Coordinator, explained that while students perform the treatments, licensed faculty members oversee the process. Dentists are also present to conduct exams and ensure quality care.

The Kids Klinic not only teaches children proper brushing and flossing techniques but also familiarizes them with dental visits, which can be a new experience for many. To alleviate common dental anxiety, students incorporate fun themes into the clinic atmosphere. “We try to ease their nerves and make it enjoyable,” said dental hygiene student Gracie Standland.

During their appointments, children receive a variety of services including teeth cleaning, x-rays, oral exams, and fluoride treatments. This initiative not only benefits the students by enhancing their skills but also addresses dental care access for families who may lack a regular dentist. Kirstie Whitfield, another dental hygiene student, noted that the clinic extends care to those without a “dental home,” allowing them to meet essential health needs.

The Kids Klinic at Gulf Coast State College serves as a vital resource for both students and the community, ensuring that children learn about and receive necessary dental care.
