Maine Dental Connection is addressing a significant gap in dental care for children across the state by bringing services directly to schools and childcare facilities. Many children in Maine are not receiving adequate dental care, with statistics showing that 60% of children on private health plans and only 20% of those on MaineCare lack access to standard dental services, according to Kalie Hess from the Children’s Oral Health Network of Maine (COHN).
Emilie Knight, the program development director at Maine Dental Connection, leads efforts to improve access to dental care. She highlights that the shortage of dental providers is a major issue, particularly for those on MaineCare, as only 25% of dentists accept this insurance. This scarcity results in long wait times and limited appointment availability, even for insured patients.
Knight also points out logistical challenges that parents face when trying to get their children to dental appointments.
Factors such as taking time off work and potential last-minute cancellations due to illness make it difficult for families to access care.
To combat these barriers, Maine Dental Connection sends dental providers into the community. Hygienist Ali Oberg and coordinator Jackie Davidson often set up in unconventional spaces like hallways or empty conference rooms to provide care.
Their aim is to create a positive experience for children, many of whom are visiting a dentist for the first time. Oberg uses fun tools like colorful sunglasses and bubblegum-flavored toothpaste to make the experience enjoyable.
Oberg believes that the quality of care provided in schools is equivalent to that offered in traditional dental offices. With a mobile x-ray machine available and all patient records reviewed by a dentist, they ensure comprehensive care.
Throughout the year, Oberg and Davidson return multiple times to the same locations, providing consistent dental check-ups for young patients. Their approach not only fosters familiarity but also helps dispel any fears children may have about visiting the dentist.
